SNOWY MOUNTAINS HYDRO SCHEME
Considered one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme took 25 years to construct, and is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world. The construction of the Snowy Hydro took more than 100,000 people from over 30 countries.
The scheme comprises 16 major dams, 7 power stations (two underground), a pumping station, 145kms of inter-connected trans-mountain tunnels and 80kms of aqueducts.
Information and Education Centre – Cooma
Snowy Mountains Hydro offers an information & education centre in Cooma. The centre houses an exhibition of photos, models and interactive displays that tell the amazing story of the Snowy Mountains Scheme from its early construction days, to the role it continues to play today.
Entry to the centre, films and all activities are free of charge.
The Centre is open
7 days (except Christmas Day, New Years Day and Anzac Day)
8:00am - 5:00pm Monday to Friday
9:00am - 2:00pm Saturday and Sunday and Public Holidays

Murray 1 Visitors Centre - Alpine Way, 10kms east of Khancoban
The Murray 1 Power Station is the second largest power station in the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The 10 turbines at Murray 1, are each capable of producing enough electricity to supply over 95,000 houses. The visitors centre at Murray 1 has an interactive exhibition with displays and models. Power station inspections are also available between 11.00am and 2.00pm
BBQ and picnic areas are available by the water, along with a cafe serving light refreshments. Entry, activities and picnic areas are free of charge.
